Adipurush review: Fails to impress, collapses in theatre screens

Adipurush review: People’s love for mythology is neverending, no matter if the story is about Mahabharat or the sacrifices of Sikh Gurus for our holy land, people love to watch the tales of history that remind us of our ancestors. The same excitement was for Om Raut-directed Adipurush which initially created a lot of buzz, however, failed to impress the audience given certain reasons.

Based on the Hindu epic Ramayana, the mythical action movie Adipurush is produced in India. Om Raut co-wrote and directed the movie, which was made by T-Series and Retrophiles. The movie, starring Prabhas, Saif Ali Khan, Kriti Sanon, Sunny Singh, and Devdatta Nage, was concurrently shot in Hindi and Telugu. Critics gave Adipurush mixed reviews when it was released on June 16, 2023; they loved the soundtrack but condemned Raut’s directing, script, language, graphics, and departure from the source material.

As much excited as the audience was during the promotional activities and interviews of the film, it was quite heartbreaking to see the audience land on a plain of disappointment and even disgust. While most people agree that the film was poorly directed, written and presented, some believed that it was ‘extremely heartbreaking’ and that the film did not respect the actual epic tale of Ramayana. Many people expressed feeling disgusted and sheer anger that the cast and crew could not deliver the real essence of a mythological tale.

Screenplay & Story

While the VFX failed to impress the audience, the simple story and screenplay could also not do much to hold the audience. The poorly written dialogues were also a major concern which cut the interest of audiences to watch.

After the release of the film, Taran Adarsh, the popular Bollywood film critic shared his personal views about the film. He expressed his disappointment via Twitter calling the movie and the entire cast and crew a ‘HUGE MESS’. Seems like many people do agree with his opinion.

Music

Attempting the justify the dialogues and the screenplay, the director of the movie claimed that this version is not directly portrayed to be Ramayan The Epic but is ‘inspired’ by the storyline. He also said that Adipurush was the ‘modernised’ version of Ramayana. However, audiences are still quite disappointed in the film due to several aspects. Simultaneously, while the film is being criticised by audiences all over the world, the music of the film impressed everyone on a great note. In the din of people sharing their highly disappointing reviews for the film, the music of Adipurush makes it big in everyone’s hearts; all thanks to the supremacy of Ajay-Atul, Sachet-Parampara and other talented singers and composers.

Box Office Collection

Adipurush had an “extraordinary first day” at the local and international box offices, according to Box Office India, earning over 150 crore (US$19 million) globally. The movie has thus far made 410 crore (US$51 million) globally. The movie’s box office performance suffered a dramatic decrease on Monday after a great opening weekend, and it further declined on Tuesday.
