PAN, or permanent account number, is a unique 10-digit alphanumeric identity allotted to each taxpayer by the Income Tax Department under the supervision of the Central Board of Direct Taxes.
It also serves as identity proof. PAN is mandatory for financial transactions such as receiving taxable salary or professional fees, sale or purchase of assets above specified limits, buy mutual funds, and more.
Your Permanent Account Number (PAN) card will inoperative if you fail to link it with your Aadhaarcard before April 1. March 31, 2021, is the last date to link your PAN card and Aadhaarcard till further notice. All PAN cards that are not linked with Aadhaar even after the deadline ends will be declared “inoperative” or no longer in use.
Earlier the last date for PAN-Aadhaar linking has again been extended by the government. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) in June had issued a notification for extending the deadline for linking the date for linking Permanent Account Number (PAN) card with Aadhaar card. The date for linking the PAN card with the Aadhaar card was extended to March 31, 2021.
The previous deadline for linking PAN with Aadhaar was June 30, 2020. As per the notification, if you do not link your PAN with your Aadhaar, then your PAN will become inoperative from April 1, 2021, and you will not be able to use your PAN to conduct the financial transactions wherever quoting of PAN is mandatory such as the opening of a bank account, etc.

As per the current laws, it is mandatory to link your PAN with your Aadhaar number, if your Aadhaar is not linked with PAN then you will not be able to use your PAN to conduct financial transactions wherever quoting of PAN is mandatory. Including, the opening of a bank account, investing in a fixed deposit, filing of income tax returns, etc.

How to link your PAN with Aadhaar
You can link your PAN with Aadhaar by the following process:
If you are already a registered user of the income tax e-filing website then chances are that your PAN is already linked with Aadhaar. It is done by the income tax department in case details of both are already available with it. You can check if your Aadhaar is already linked to your PAN by visiting the income tax e-filing website www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in
However, if your PAN is not linked to Aadhaar then a form will appear where you will be required to enter details – name, date of birth, and gender as per PAN records, next to your Aadhaar number. Once done, click on submit after entering the captcha code appearing on the screen. Once submitted, a success message will be displayed on your screen.
If you are a non-registered user then you need to follow a few simple steps:
- Visit Income Tax e-filing portal, https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/
- On Menu bar and click on ‘Link Aadhaar’
- On the new screen, enter your details such as PAN number, AAdhaar Number, Name as per Aadhaar
- If your Aadhaar card has the only year of birth, then you must also tick the option: ‘I have only year of birth in Aadhaar card’
- Verify all the details, at last, enter Captcha Code and click Link Aadhaar.
That’s it! A pop-up message will inform you that your Aadhaar has been successfully linked to your PAN.
